Fronius Collaborates With Tigo On A Compatible Rapid Shutdown Solution Specified by SunSpec Alliance

This multivendor partnership will comply with NEC 2017 regulations.

Portage, IN, September 19, 2017 – Fronius, a leading manufacturer for solar solutions, and Tigo, pioneer of the smart modular Flex MLPE platform, are collaborating to conduct compatibility testing of the Communication Signal for Rapid Shutdown Specification from SunSpec Alliance. As stated in the original initiative, Fronius believes that the best module-level rapid shutdown solutions are not single vendor solutions.

The SunSpec Alliance’s working group for the Communication Signal for Rapid Shutdown SunSpec Specification “defines a multi-vendor, multi-device (e.g. inverter, module, string combiner) communication interoperability specification to support NEC 2014, NEC 2017 and UL 1741 module-level rapid shutdown requirements.” Fronius has been actively working with Tigo as well as other technology providers, industry groups, and module manufacturers so that customers have access to a variety of safe and cost-effective solutions.

“The SunSpec Alliance allows market leaders to collaborate on ground-breaking issues in the solar industry,” says Bijay Shrestha, Compliance Manager at Tigo. “We are excited to take part with Fronius as this particular Rapid Shutdown initiative transforms into wide adoption.”

“Fronius is still convinced that the working group approach will provide customers with access to best-in-class technology, aggressive price points, and freedom of choice while driving innovation,” explains Michael Mendik, Head of Solution Management at Fronius USA. “Our successful partnerships with Tigo and other industry leaders within the SunSpec Alliance are based on these important standards.”

Fronius will launch the first inverter with SunSpec Rapid Shutdown capability in 2018. The new addition is 100% compatible and certified by about 40 PV module suppliers currently using its TS4 platform. The new offering is also available for add-on or retrofit applications.
