Seeking an experienced Crew Foreperson/Superintendent to lead solar residential and commercial solar installations and manage a team of solar installers. All work will benefit low-income families around the Bay Area.


  • Lead the installation of solar panel arrays and electrical systems on residential (1 – 5kW) and commercial properties (20 – 300kW+)
  • Lead the installation of solar panel arrays and electrical systems on 1 MW of solar carports
  • Directly manage a team of solar installers
  • Lead continuing education/certification training sessions for team members and students/job trainees
  • Responsible for all technical and safety aspects of PV installations, ensuring that all solar installations are installed according to GRID Alternatives safety and quality standards
  • Lead installations of PV systems with crews that include volunteers, job trainees, and employee volunteers of sponsoring organizations
  • Work with the Construction Manager to ensure that all monthly and annual goals are met
  • Conduct site visits to screen sites for solar access and safety issues
  • Attend to service calls in a timely manner
  • Manage sub contractors
  • Other responsibilities may include hardware store and permit runs, equipment unloading and loading, answering homeowner and volunteer questions, and generally participating in activities necessary to make solar happen for low-income families
  • Job involves both in-office as well as in-field time
  • Reports to Bay Area Construction Manager


  • Experienced solar installer comfortable installing on both rooftops (residential and commercial) and carports
  • Excellent management/leadership skills, including the ability to build a positive work environment and to foster leadership among the team
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to work with volunteers and job trainees
  • Ability to relate to and respect diverse populations
  • Ability to lead and to follow. Proven teamwork experience
  • Proficient with computers
  • Available for occasional weekend and evening work
  • Able to travel the greater Bay Area region; must hold a valid drivers license
  • Passion for environmental justice, sustainability, affordable housing, the environment, or just generally grounded in making the world a better place
  • Flexible and willing to embrace change, go the extra mile, and bring ideas and energy to rapidly growing organization

Preferred Qualifications

  • NABCEP PV Installer Certification
  • Experience living and/or working in economically disadvantaged communities and with diverse populations
  • Experience and/or passion with volunteer management

Office Location
GRID Alternatives Bay Area office is located in Oakland.  This position requires some travel to sites throughout the greater Bay Area.

This is a full-time position, compensation commensurate with experience.
