Job Description

The Midwest Renewable Energy Association (MREA) Solar Finance Manager will support MREA’s efforts to facilitate the development of solar photovoltaic (PV) installations with target stakeholders in the Midwest. The manager will work closely with the MREA Grow Solar team to identify appropriate project finance strategies and model financial returns for partnering university, municipal, and agricultural entities in the Midwest. Building off of past efforts in Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, and Minnesota the MREA is further developing services to help these stakeholders define and grow investments in solar energy. As part of this engagement, The Solar Finance Manager will further develop and apply financial modeling tools to project returns from PV investments and provide resources and recommendations for entities to procure outside services to advance projects. The Solar Finance Manager will also work closely with the MREA Professional Development Team to support the further development and delivery of the MREA PV Design and Sales Certificate.

This position is partially funded through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Department of Energy SunShot Initiative with funding through 2017. The MREA Leadership Team will work closely with the PV Finance Manager to develop fee for service programming and secure additional funding to continue and expand activities beyond the term of the agreement.

Primary Responsibilities

1.     Program Coordination

·       Support MREA efforts to model PV project financial returns for partnering university, municipal, and agricultural entities, including:

o   Identification of rules, regulations, procedures, site characteristics, and other factors that influence the design and financing of PV systems

o   Analysis of suitable project financial structures for tax and non-tax paying entities

o   Utilizing PV financial modeling tool to develop system design and sizing recommendations intended to maximize financial performance based on net present value, internal rate of return, cash flow nature, and other metrics of importance to project partners

o   The development of detailed reports that provide background information and clear recommendations for PV project development

·       Support MREA efforts to further develop solar group purchase programs, including:

o   Analysis of expected PV system financial performance in target jurisdictions

o   Modeling of PV financial arrangements to facilitate PV adoption by Low to Moderate Income households and service agencies

o   Review of proposals submitted by contractors to ensure validity of PV financial projections

·       Work with the MREA Professional Development Team to further develop and offer the MREA PV Design and Sales Certificate to individuals and groups throughout the US, including:

o   Improvement of the MREA PV Financial Model and PV Design and Sales Report Template utilized by students in the program

o   Further development of supportive curriculum

o   On-line and in-person instruction of the MREA PV Sales and Finance course

o   Technical mentoring of student design and sales proposals as needed

2.     Administration

·       Participate in MREA staff meetings, MREA Grow Solar working group, and other working groups as appropriate.

·       Participate in MREA Board of Director meetings and planning sessions.

·       Follow MREA remote work procedures, including office hour scheduling, work-from-home scheduling, and activity reporting.

3.     Personnel

·       Attend staff professional development events and other all-staff work days as requested

·       Participate in staff reviews


A successful candidate will be/have:

  • Results oriented and self-directed, with a passion for the MREA’s mission
  • Organized and focused with proven ability to prioritize and complete activities to satisfy grant and contract objectives
  • Able and willing to travel and work some weekends as needed
  • Demonstrated ability in PV project financial modeling with specific experiences modeling projects with complicated utility rate structures including demand charges and variable rate structures.
  • Accustomed to working with a variety of computer programs, demonstrating proficiency in word processing, presentation software, and data management
  • An excellent written and verbal communicator who can promote the MREA’s mission to the public and market stakeholders
  • Familiar with the rapidly changing renewable energy marketplace, specifically in Minnesota

Preference will be given to candidates who:

  • Have a bachelors or other advanced degree in a related field, including finance, energy policy, or related fields
  • Have teaching and public presentation experience
  • Have 3 or more years of professional experience in PV design and sales and related professional credential such as the NABCEP PV Technical Sales Certification
